How to Prepare for a Recording Session: A Checklist for Musicians

How to Prepare for a Recording Session: A Checklist for Musicians

So you’re planning on having a recording session, planning on booking a session at a studio? Recording a song or album can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can also be confusing if you’re not prepared. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or a first-time recording artist, it’s important to know what to expect and how to prepare for a recording session. Here is a 7 step checklist to help you prepare for your next recording session.

If you’re looking for the No. 1 App to find and book recording studios, download Stufinder on iOS and Android today.

    1. Practice, Practice, Practice

Practice makes perfect, and this is especially true when it comes to recording. Make sure you’re comfortable with your lyrics and material, and practice your songs until you can play them flawlessly. Trying practicing with a metronome. This will not only make the recording process smoother but will also give you confidence in the studio. You can record demos on your phone using voice memo or other apps.

    1. Bring Extra Strings, Picks, and Batteries

If you’re in a band or play guitar, the last thing you want is to have a guitar string break or run out of batteries in the middle of a recording session. Make sure you bring extra strings, picks, and batteries for all your instruments and equipment. You never know when you might need them.

    1. Be Prepared to Record in Sections

Recording sessions can be time-consuming, and it’s not always possible to record a song in one take. Be prepared to record your songs in sections, such as the verses, choruses, and bridges. This will allow you to focus on each section individually and make any necessary adjustments before moving on. Sometimes things don’t go according to plan in a recording session, so it’s important to be prepared to improvise. A positive attitude can go a long way in ensuring a successful recording session. Come to the session with an open mind and a willingness to take direction from the producer or engineer. Be flexible and adaptable, and remember that the goal is to create the best possible recording.

    1. Know Your Arrangements

Make sure you know your song arrangements inside and out. This includes knowing the order of the verses, choruses, and bridges, as well as any instrumental breaks or solos. This will help you stay on track during the recording session and make sure you don’t forget any important parts.

    1. Bring a Water Bottle and Snacks

Recording sessions can be long and tiring, so it’s important to stay hydrated and fueled. Bring a water bottle and some snacks to keep your energy up throughout the session. Not all studios will have snacks so if you’re booking through the Stufinder app, make sure you see snacks in the amenities section of the studio you’re booking.

    1. Be ready to Communicate

Be ready to communicate clearly with the engineer about what you want to achieve with your recording. Let them know your vision for the song and any specific sounds or effects you want to achieve. This will help ensure that the final product is exactly what you want.

    1. Be Rested

Recording sessions can be mentally and physically exhausting, Make sure you take care of yourself in the days leading up to the recording session. Get plenty of rest, eat well, and stay hydrated. Avoid excessive alcohol or drug use, unless you require or want it in the studio while you’re recording.

Preparing for a recording session is key to a successful recording. With this checklist, you’ll be well on your way to a successful recording experience. By practicing your music, choosing your gear carefully, communicating with the producer or engineer, bringing a positive attitude, taking care of yourself, know your arrangements, and being prepared to improvise, you can ensure that you’re ready to give your best performance in the studio. Good luck!

Studio of the Week: SubCat Studios (Syracuse, NY)

Studio of the Week this week is SubCat Studios (@subcatstudios) in Syracuse, NY. Through the Stufinder platform you can now book sessions at SubCat Music Studios‘ three studio rooms (Studio A, Studio B, and Studio C) today.

Located in the Syracuse, NY, SubCat Studios was initially founded in 2001 in Skaneateles, NY, and later relocated to Syracuse in 2011. This move transformed the studio into the widely recognized and respected creative space it is today. SubCat Studios has three studio rooms; Studio A is $70/hour, Studio B is $60/hour, Studio C is $45/hour, all studio rooms include an in-house engineer. SubCat Studios’ past clients include Future, Lil Tjay, Scorey, Adrien Brody, Patton Oswald, Tim Tebow, Rich Redmond, Vinny and Carmine Appice, Tim “Ripper” Owens, and many more.

SubCat Studios was founded by Ron Keck, due to the rise of technological advancements in audio engineering around the late 90’s and early 2000’s. “SubCat Studios represents a cornerstone in the Central New York community for both musicians and the arts in general. We’ve created a standard and maintained an esteemed reputation by offering top-notch facilities, an inviting ambiance, and competitive rates. SubCat represents the premier destination for creativity and innovation within Syracuse’s thriving entertainment industry.” says Cody Slade from SubCat Studios.

SubCat Studios has done a lot of voiceover work for television networks and films. A few examples of voiceover work done here include Law & Order SVU, the new “Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder,” America’s Most Wanted, and Naked & Afraid. Recently, they completed some ADR work on Charlie Day’s film “Fool’s Paradise,” the trailer for which was released this week.

We asked Cody what’s the funniest thing that’s happened at the studio he told us, “Our engineers’ versatility often leads to fascinating interactions between various music genres. Our studios are situated on opposite ends of the main hallway, and one day we had a metal band in Studio A and a rap artist in Studio B. They must have crossed paths in the hallway because, before we knew it, the metal band’s vocalist was in Studio B, collaborating on the hook for the rap artist’s song.

The interaction during the recording was hilarious, as it’s not a typical genre blend you’d expect to see. However, witnessing such a unique collaboration unfold served as a reminder that the potential for creative connections between musicians is endless.”

Cody Slade tells us that “Efforts are underway to establish an Arts Corridor in Syracuse, turning old buildings into spaces for art-related businesses. Our building is the proposed starting point for the corridor, and with the help of some private parties, we’re working to bring animation and larger post-production projects to Syracuse.”

    SubCat Studios Syracuse, NY

“As the Arts Corridor project progresses and more businesses emerge within it, I think many of them will find it helpful to use Stufinder as their main booking platform.”

Future recorded his feature for “Grammys” in Studio A of SubCat Studios.

Scorey started off recording most of his tracks in Studio C before he got his break and relocated to advance his music career to the next level.

  • 20 Words You Need To Know Before Going To A Recording Studio

20 Words You Need To Know Before Going To A Recording Studio

Recording in a studio can be an exciting and intimidating experience, especially if you’re new to the process. To help you navigate through the technical jargon and communicate effectively with engineers and producers, here are 20 essential words you need to know before going to a recording studio.

    1. DAW: DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation. It’s a software program used for recording, editing, and mixing audio. Common DAWs include Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and Ableton Live.

    2. Mix: A mix is the final version of a recorded song or track. It’s the process of blending together all the individual tracks (vocals, drums, guitars, etc.) into a cohesive and balanced whole.

    3. EQ: EQ stands for equalization. It’s the process of adjusting the balance of frequencies in an audio signal. EQ is used to enhance or remove certain frequencies, such as boosting the bass or cutting out unwanted high-pitched sounds.

    4. Compression: Compression is the process of reducing the dynamic range of an audio signal. This means that the loudest parts of the recording are made quieter, while the quieter parts are made louder. Compression is used to create a more consistent sound and to prevent clipping (when the loudest parts of a recording exceed the maximum level).

    5. Reverb: Reverb is a type of effect that simulates the sound of a room or space. It’s used to add depth and dimension to a recording. Reverb can be applied to individual tracks or to the entire mix.

    6. Interface: An interface is the hardware used to connect microphones, instruments, and other audio sources to a computer or DAW. It usually includes preamps and converters to improve the quality of the sound.

    7. Track: A track refers to an individual channel of audio within a recording. In a DAW, each track can be edited and processed independently.

    8. Compression: Compression is a process used to reduce the dynamic range of a track by decreasing the volume of loud sounds and increasing the volume of quiet sounds. This is used to control the dynamics of a performance and make it sound more polished.

    9. Monitoring: Monitoring refers to the process of listening to the audio being recorded or played back through speakers or headphones. It is important to monitor the sound accurately to make sure it sounds good and is free of errors.

    10. Delay: Delay is an effect that creates an echo-like effect. It’s used to add space and depth to a recording, as well as to create rhythmic patterns. Delay can be used on individual tracks or on the entire mix.

    11. Tracking: Tracking is the process of recording individual tracks (such as vocals, drums, or guitars) in a recording studio. Each track is recorded separately and later mixed together to create the final version of the song.

    12. Mastering: Mastering is the final step in the recording process. It’s the process of preparing the mix for distribution, such as adjusting the overall volume, adding final EQ, and applying compression. Mastering is done by a mastering engineer and is usually done after the mix is complete.

    13. Punch In/Out: Punch In/Out is a technique used in recording to fix mistakes or to add new parts to a recording. It involves recording over a section of a track, while preserving the rest of the recording.

    14. Stem: A stem is a group of tracks that are mixed down into a single stereo track. Stems are often used for remixing or for creating alternate versions of a song. For example, a stem might contain only the vocals or only the drums.

    15. dB: dB is the main unit of volume measurement.

    16. Pitch: Pitch is the frequency of a note in Hertz.

    17. Pop Filter: Pop filter is a filter placed in front of a microphone to reduce the sound of plosives/”pop” sounds.

    18. Reference/Reference Track: A Reference/Reference Track is a tracj that is used as a reference point for a new recording.

    19. Sample: A sample is a piece of pre-made or pre-existing audio used as a sound in a new composition.

    20. Transport: A transport is a section of a DAW that contains the record, play, pause, stop, and other buttons.

By familiarizing yourself with these words, you will be able to communicate more effectively with engineers and producers, and better understand the recording process. Remember to ask questions if you’re unsure of anything, and don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun in the studio. With a little practice, you’ll be on your way to creating great recordings in no time. We all have to start somewhere.

  • Studio of the Week: Rarefied Recording (San Diego, CA)

Studio of the Week: Rarefied Recording (San Diego, CA)

Studio of the Week this week is Rarefied Recording (@rarefiedrecording) in San Diego, CA. Through the Stufinder platform you can now book sessions at Rarefied Recording today.

Located in the North Park area of San Diego, You can book an hour session here for $100/hour, it includes an engineer. Rarefied Recording past clients include Slightly Stoopid, Unwritten Law, Rob $tone, Hirie, Streetlight Cadence, and Beach Goons. Rarefied has also been proud to host sessions for some amazing engineers/producers such as Darrell Thorp (Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Beck), Dennis Weinreich (Queen, Jeff Beck, Super Tramp), Tanner Sparks (Switchfoot, Weezer), and Brian Scheuble (Tom Petty, Ice Cube, Fiona Apple, Elton John).

Rarefied Recording was founded by Engineer Roy Silverstein in June of 2013.

“I started Rarefied to fulfill my personal dream of having a professional place to record and mix music. I came up through the home recording path, having started on a cassette 4 track in the 90’s and then slowly graduating up from there. I never worked in a studio, but I always took recording very seriously and became frustrated by the limitations of the bedroom/living room setups I had been operating in. So when I was able to afford it, I hired a studio designer (Wes Lachot) and built out Rarefied not knowing exactly where it would go, but excited to finally have a place with nothing holding me back from my highest potential. Little did I know the community of engineers I was about to become meshed with. That has driven the studio to greater heights and provided additional drive for me to maintain the space to the highest standards. Since September of 2015, Rarefied has been my full time gig as an owner/operator and chief engineer.” Roy Silverstein tells us.

Rarefied Recording is professionally acoustically treated and sessions include an in-house engineer. With state of the art equipments and a beautiful aesthetic, Rarefied Recording provides rich and intricate sounds and a good time. Book a session at Rarefied Recording today.

We asked Roy what Rarefied meant and he told us “Rarefied is a word often associated with the upper echelons of a society or group of people. The most elite. The most talented. The cream of the cream. To rarefy (as a verb) also means to make more complex, intricate, and rich which musically speaking is essentially the goal. I’ve got the facility and tools at hand to refine one’s music to greater heights. That not only means exceptional room acoustics, but also a well curated equipment and instrument list. Another tie in to audio- sound in its most physical sense is simply the compression and RAREFACTION (expansion) of air. Those local air pressure changes are what the eardrum is sensitive to and what we perceive as sound.”

Roy Silverstein also had this to tell us “While it’s fun to see some of these very exclusive studios pop up on Stufinder that cost insane dollars, Rarefied has always been a place that empathizes with the plight of today’s independent artist. I’m acutely aware that the average artist/band has limited financial resources at their command. To this end, my M.O. has been to keep my overhead low and offer what I believe is a fair and attainable rate for most people while still supplying a facility and sonic result that matches what you’d expect from any top tier studio. I hope those in San Diego and even from Orange County, and Los Angeles will give Rarefied a close look when choosing their next place to record. I believe that what you get in terms of vibe, price, sound of the rooms, and equipment are of exceptional value. Whether it’s myself engineering or one of my many local engineering friends, we will do our best to do right by your music. Thanks in advance for trusting Rarefied with your art.”

Hirie’s “Dreamer” and Unwritten Law’s “The Hum” was recorded at this studio.

Slightly Stoopid’s “Everyday Life, Everyday People” and Rob $tone’s “Stone Cold” was mixed at this studio.

On March 28th or 29th, music enthusiasts (especially pianists and piano lovers) of all races and ages around the world come together to celebrate World Piano Day. This special occasion pays tribute to the piano’s timeless elegance, versatility, and its profound impact on the world of music.

The Origins of World Piano Day

World Piano Day is an annual celebration that was initiated by the renowned German pianist, Nils Frahm. Inspired by the 88 keys of a standard piano, the event is held on March 28th, symbolizing the 88 notes found on the keyboard. This day provides an opportunity to honor the rich history and influence of the piano in various musical genres, from classical masterpieces to contemporary compositions.

World Piano Day began in 2015, and the first celebration was on March 29th, 2015, but “why do we need a World Piano Day?” one might ask… “For many reasons. But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers, and most importantly, the listener,” says Nils Frahm, the German pianist, and composer who initiated World Piano Day in 2015.

How many keys are on a piano?

    88 keys.

    Who invented the piano?

    Bartolomeo Cristofori.

    The Origins of The Piano

The story of the piano began several centuries ago, evolving from its predecessors such as the harpsichord and clavichord. Bartolomeo Cristofori, an Italian instrument maker, is credited with inventing the piano in the early 18th century. His innovation allowed musicians to control the dynamics and expressiveness of their performances through touch and variations in volume.

Since its invention, the piano has become an integral part of classical compositions, concert halls, and countless homes around the world. It has inspired renowned composers like Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who crafted timeless pieces that have resonated through the ages to modern pianists like Billy Joel, Jon Legend, Khatia Buniatishvili, Fazıl Say, Alicia Keys, and more.

There are a couple of websites dedicated to Piano Day like The Piano Day Project PianoDay.org, with events all over the world, “The aim of the day is to create a platform for piano-related projects in order to promote the development of musical dimensions and to continue sharing the centuries-old joy of playing the piano.” says the website. There is also WorldPianoDay.com.

    Benefits of Playing Piano

There are many benefits to playing the piano like enhancing cognitive abilities, improving hand-eye coordination, and boosting creativity. Playing the piano can be a source of solace, a therapeutic outlet, or a means of self-expression.

    Celebrating World Piano Day

World Piano Day provides a unique opportunity for music lovers to celebrate the piano’s enduring legacy. Attend concerts, recitals, or intimate gatherings where pianists enchant audiences with their skill and passion. This day is dedicated to those connected to the instrument.

If you’re new to the piano, consider taking lessons or dedicating time to practice and explore this instrument. Embrace the joy of music-making and let the piano unlock your creativity.

World Piano Day serves as a global homage to the enchanting instrument that has mesmerized generations with its beauty and versatility. Whether you’re a musician, a music enthusiast, or someone simply captivated by the piano’s melodic allure, take a moment on March 28th to celebrate the profound impact it has had on the world of music. The oldest piano in the world is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

You can celebrate Piano Day in many ways like playing the piano, learning to play the piano, attending Piano Day events – the Piano Day Project Website has a lot of piano events, visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to see the oldest piano in the world, listening to piano music – We’ll make a playlist for 2024, and thanking or supporting a pianist.

Happy Piano Day from all of us at Stufinder! Use the hashtag #WorldMusicDay on social medias to spread awareness.
